✋guilty of this email faux pas


Hey, hey Reader,

Recently, I subscribed to a very well-known EdTech company's email list via their website.

And, I went right back to my inbox awaiting my first email.

Crickets.

Then, I checked my spam, refreshed, and toggled back and forth between spam, promotinal, and primary.

Still, nothing.

No, warm welcome for me?

One of the lowest lifts you can do with your EdTech website is to have a pop-up box that asks if a website visitor wants to subscribe, stay in touch, stay in the loop, whatever.

It's the best way to get email subscribers organically, and it's an opportunity to engage with them and continue the conversation.

An even better (& more automated) approach is to use RightMessage when a web visitor goes to subscribe.

I've been reading a lot about how AI can help to segment email lists from the gate.

Then it does all the segmenting for you, and you get some extremely valuable data.

You'd just need to have your welcome sequence ready to go for the different segments you create.

Remember a segment answers 'who' the person is and 'what' they want.

If you don’t send a welcome email when someone subscribes, you’re missing the moment when they’re most interested in hearing from you.

That first email sets the tone and has the highest open rates. It’s your chance to build trust in your brand, reinforce why they subscribed, and keep them engaged.

So if you don’t have a welcome email in place yet, let this be your friendly nudge. A simple, automated message can go a long way in making subscribers feel like they belong.

And if you do have one? Take a minute to check it.

  • Is it personal and engaging? Meaning, what does the data reveal against industry standards?
  • Does it give them a reason to keep opening your emails?
  • Or does it feel like a generic, forgettable afterthought?
